Chetan Bhagat’s novel “2 States: The Story of My Marriage”:
In this delightful tale, we meet Krish and Ananya, two students at the prestigious IIM (Indian Institute of Management). They come from two different states in India: Punjab and Tamil Nadu. Despite their cultural differences, their love blossoms within the college walls. However, as they step into the real world after graduation, the question of marriage looms large.
Krish and Ananya face a tough battle to convert their love story into a love marriage. While it’s easy to rebel, convincing their parents is a whole different challenge. The novel is narrated in a humorous tone, often poking fun at both Tamil and Punjabi cultures.
The story begins in the IIM Ahmedabad mess hall, where Krish, a Punjabi boy from Delhi, spots the beautiful Ananya, a Tamilian from Chennai, engaged in a heated argument with the mess staff about the food. Ananya is tagged as the “Best girl of the fresher batch.” Their friendship blossoms quickly, and soon they graduate and secure jobs, all the while planning their wedding.
Krish’s efforts to win over Ananya’s parents include helping her brother with IIT tuition and assisting her father in creating his first PowerPoint presentation. He even arranges for her mother to fulfill her dream of singing at a concert organized by Krish’s employer, City Bank. With Ananya’s parents convinced, the couple faces the next hurdle: Krish’s mother.
However, Krish’s mother’s relatives disapprove of the relationship, especially since they don’t want Krish to marry a Tamilian. Ananya steps in to help one of Krish’s cousins get married, eventually winning them over. Now that both sets of parents are on board, Krish and Ananya plan a trip to Mumbai to allow their families to get acquainted. Unfortunately, things take a sour turn, and Ananya’s parents clash with Krish’s mother, leaving them convinced that their families can never get along.
Krish returns home, becoming a depressed workaholic. Throughout the story, his relationship with his father remains strained. But in a heartwarming twist, Krish’s father travels to Chennai to meet Ananya’s parents and successfully convinces them to bless their union. Krish and Ananya tie the knot in Chennai, following South Indian traditions, and the novel ends with Ananya giving birth to twin boys. Krish playfully declares that the babies belong to a state called ‘India,’ symbolizing unity and the end of inequality.
