Nelson Mandal is one of the most inspiring figures in modern history. From 1963 to 1990 he was a “prisoner of conscience”, a hero of social justice, who was unjustly imprisoned for his struggle against apartheid. The apartheid policy was part of South Africa’s institutionalized racism. He was committed to finding a peaceful solution to his country’s social problems, and was eventually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this. The whole world joined Mandela in his non-violent struggle for equality of rights for his people, and it was proved that through goodwill and international support it is certainly possible to overthrow oppressive rulers. By becoming the first black President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa, he also demolished the right obstacles.
