The play Mudrarakshas composed by Samant Vishakhadatta has a very important place in Sanskrit literature. The characteristics of this play are that
One – from beginning to end all men – are characters. There is only one female character, which has basically nothing to do with the plot. He has been given space only to generate compassion. Centuries later in England, Shakespeare wrote a similar play, Julius Caesar, in which all male characters are predominantly and women have a very minor role.
The main reason for this is that both the plays mainly reveal the conspiracy, mischief and tricks of politics. There is a depiction of the Indian political situation during the Mauryan period in Mudrarakshasa.
